  1. This is a book I want to read. My Dad said back in the mid-70s that no one should be surprised when the great unwashed grew in numbers. Educated, monied people were having 1 child, maybe 2. They were having 7 and 8. I come from a family of 7, upper class in education, middle class in income. Dad was very aware of the folks who had left rural areas and tried to make life better for themselves in the big cities. Another book that must be read to understand this sad phenomenon is "The Dollmaker" by Harriet Arnow. There used to be a joke that Indianapolis was made from those people whose cars broke down on their way to Detroit during WWII. Not so funny. Our country is made for and sympathetic only to the well-to-do, and in this blindness we are now reaping the whirlwind.
